Trade war: China responds to Trump with higher tariffs
China announced a series of tariffs on U.S. products in retaliation for the tariffs on Chinese goods imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The Chinese tariffs, set to take effect next Monday, include a 15% tax on coal and liquefied natural gas, as well as a 10% tax on oil, agricultural machinery, vans, and certain luxury cars, BBC News Mundo reported.
Analysts consulted by Bloomberg said that China’s response currently appears cautious, targeting specific products—an indication of its intention not to escalate tariffs too sharply.
Beginning early Tuesday morning, the United States has been applying a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports. President Trump argues that the measure addresses the trade deficit with the Asian nation and serves to pressure China to halt the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.
Meanwhile, Beijing accused Washington of violating international trade rules. “The unilateral imposition of tariffs by the U.S. is a serious violation of World Trade Organization rules. Not only does it fail to solve its own issues, but it also undermines normal cooperation and trade between China and the U.S.,” said the statement announcing the retaliatory tariffs.
